Leather Industries of Uganda Limited (LIU) was founded in 1995 to take over assets of the first government tannery in East Africa;Uganda Leather and Tanning Industries (ULATI) established in 1979 located near the source of River Nile on the Shores of Lake Victoria. This laid foundation to a company that now employs over 300 staff throughout East Africa. Our company is part of the Industrial Promotion Services (IPS), an infrastructure and industrial development arm of Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).

Commitment, creativity and professionalism have made LIU a point of reference in the processing of wetblue bovine hides for the furniture, footwear and leather goods. Our Tannery processes high quality wetblue leather that is supplied globally to finished leather manufactures.

Ensuring a sustainable environment for the future generation is our definite concern at Leather Industries of Uganda. We uphold environmental protection and pollution control and have a well-coordinated chemicals management mechanism to ensure that our product is free from any form of restricted substances. Our objective is to ensure an insignificant environmental footprint.

We are members in the Leather Working Group (LWG). Leather Industries of Uganda Limited has been continuously audited by third party organizations and bestowed with  the  "Silver LWG Award" for its good ethical, environmental and safety practice in the processing of hides.

Our quality control team ensures that our product is processed to meet the highest standard suitable for a wide range of finished leathers.  We take customer requirements seriously and ensure on time delivery of the orders to enable every customer meet their timelines. We take traceability of raw material very seriously and provide traceability for our raw material. Our mechanism of registering and coding each hide with its originality helps track backwards the source origin region of the hides.
