About Us

Leather Industries of Uganda Limited (LIU) was founded in 1995 to take over assets of the first government tannery in East Africa known as Uganda Leather and Tanning Industries (ULATI) established in 1979 in Uganda and located in Uganda on the Shores of Lake Victoria and near the source of River Nile. This laid foundation to a company that now employs over 500 staff throughout East Africa. Our company is part of the Industrial Promotion Services (IPS), an infrastructure and industrial development arm of Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).

The Waste Management / Treatment Plant

Commitment, creativity and professionalism made LIU a point of reference in the processing of bovine hides for the furniture, footwear, leather goods, automotive, marine, and aviation industry. Leather Industries of Uganda Limited is East Africa’s leading supplier of high quality cow hides’ Wet blue Leather in full substance, full grain split, full split, double butt split, single butt split and calfskin leather. Our Tannery processes high quality Wetblue Leather that is supplied globally to finished leathers manufactures.

Since establishment, LIU has grown to be a leader in the leather industry across East Africa for the last 24 years of existence and has set a benchmark for tanneries in the region to improve the quality of leather while ensuring high environmental performance standards.

From inception, environmental sustainability was one of LIU’s key pillars. This was a natural consideration since the process of converting raw hides and skins to finished leather can potentially have a negative environmental impact considering the fact that mismanagement of organic waste material and inorganic chemicals used in the tanning process can put the natural ecosystem at risk of pollution.

LIU’s management is committed to invest in increasing resource efficiency and productivity through substitution of old technologies with new, clean and efficient technologies. This commitment to continuous improvement is very decisive to environmental sustainability.
